Love. That is the complex answer to a very simple question for me. It’s really interesting what she says “I can’t give you what a man can.” A lot of gay men avoid relationships with bi men because they worry that they can’t provide what a woman can. People, gay or straight, think that for a bi person the grass is always greener on the other side.

Straight men and lesbians have said the same. It’s insecurity rooted in the notion that bi people have all the options constantly at their fingertips AND are insatiable. We don’t choose a team, we choose a person. A failure to understand this mostly boils down to people not believing bisexuality is real.

I’m a librarian and I’m queer. As a member of the community, I help LGBT youth in a few ways. One is that I’m out and I let young people know that I’m out. In this way, they see that an adult they work with and respect is “different” and they see it’s OK. The other way I help is that I collect books that are of interest to LGBTQ youth. Many of the books I choose also feature LGBT characters. In this way, they see themselves in books and feel less alone in the world. We’re not alone, I promise.

OutFront: This advocate couldn't find a bisexual community, so he created one

Bisexual advocate Greg Ward has been told there's no such thing as a bisexual person. He's heard it from gay and straight people alike.

In 2014, Ward started Fluid Arizona, a group for people who are attracted to more than one gender. […]

“They talk about how my stories have really helped them and they’ll have similar experiences and being able to be a part of the online community helps them identify with other people like them,” he said. “They realize they’re not alone in this world, that they have this strong community that they can share the fears they have, whatever excitements they have, with others just like them.”

After coming out to his friends and family, Ward came out to coworkers at a manufacturing company where he used to work. One of them told him she thought being bisexual was “gross,” he said. 

He didn’t let it go.“I told her flat out, ’It’s not gross, and I don’t ever want you to say that to my face again,’” he recalled. He said the coworker apologized.

Time to d-d-d-drop some knowledge about LGBTQ+ terms!

Today’s term is non-binary: A person whose gender identity does not conform to the gender binary, which is the erroneous idea that only two distinct and opposite genders exist (man and woman). In reality, many genders exist, and have existed throughout history! Some nonbinary people identify with more than one gender, while others don’t identify with any.

The important thing: there are many ways to be nonbinary, and everyone’s experience with gender is different.
