At a special L.A. LGBT Youth Scholarship Awards ceremony on Wednesday night, the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s LifeWorks program distributed  scholarships totaling $42,000 to 24 lesbian, gay, bisexual,  transgender (LGBT) youth. Hosted by stalwart Center supporter Alec Mapa (Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives), the awards ceremony took place at the Center’s Village at Ed Gould Plaza in Hollywood.

“LGBT youth encounter so much homophobia and hatred. I want them to know that it’s OK to be who you are, to be out and fabulous,” says Mapa, who has appeared on stage at the Center’s Renberg Theatre several times and recently performed an encore of his hit one-man show Baby Daddy. “That’s why I’m so proud to support the Center—it does so much to help young LGBT people thrive. Like these scholarships; without this money, a lot of these young people wouldn’t be able to pursue their dreams of going to college.”

On October 17th, Archie Comics, along with many other participating corporations, national landmarks, celebrities and schools will “go purple” in a show of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth. This is a great honor as this is not only the first year Kevin Keller is participating in this momentous event, but Kevin is also the first fictional character to ever be chosen as a Spirit Day ambassador! From Losing My First Boyfriend to Homophobia to Empowering LGBT Youth: It Gets Better

High school is a tough time for everyone; we’re all trying to figure out who we are, how to be adults, and what “clique” we fit into. This is especially difficult if you’re also trying to figure out if you’re gay or not.

I knew by freshman year that I was gay, but that entire year was a lie for me. I thought being gay was bad, or wrong, or maybe just a phase, and I knew I could hide it. But the pressure of all the lies was deeply upsetting, so I told my best friend. She proceeded to tell everyone else, too, to spread rumors about me. My lie was over, people knew, and I felt like everyone was staring at me. But at least I still had the support I needed to stay alive: my boyfriend.
