Tomorrow August 24th is the last day for Australians to enroll to vote in a non-binding postal survey on marriage equality. Based on the results of the vote, the Australian Parliament will then vote on relevant legislation.
Half a million young people between the ages of 18-39 are missing from the electoral.
As such, MTV will be blacked out alongside PEDESTRIAN.TV, Broadsheet, VICE, Junkee, and FBi Radio, to remind & encourage those who have yet to enroll to do so.
In a joint statement, they’ve said, “marriage equality is perhaps the most important social fight we’ve faced in the last decade, so we’re doing just that.”
If you’re in Australia, you can enroll to vote here or update your details here.

“The lower house passed the bill by a margin of 393-226 and the measure is expected to be put in place by the end of the year. The reform means same sex couples now have full marital rights, including child adoption. HUGE NEWS from the Supreme Court today! Marriage equality is on its way! (via Freedom to Marry)
Check out the new issue of The New Yorker, a beautiful ode to marriage equality.
Fascinating look at the life of Chi Chia-wei, whose case it was that led to the Taiwanese court declaring bans on same sex marriage unconstitutional.
He’s been fighting for LGBTQ rights for 30 years. He was the first person to publicly come out in Taiwan in 1986, during a time when the country was under martial law. When he submitted a request for gay marriage to be recognized, he was imprisoned.
Still, through immense passion and dedication, Taiwan is immensely close to marriage equality. The public largely says yes, and now so too do the judges.
“I never tire,” Chi said. “Every morning when I wake up, it’s like my first day of doing this 30 years ago.”
Marriage equality comes to Taiwan! Congratulations!
